Why Every Meeting Is Not Useless - The Importance of One on One's for Hoteliers

You hear it all the time in corporate culture:

"We have too many pointless meetings"

"Meetings are a waste of time"

"Meetings are dumb"

I might have made the last one up, but I am sure someone has said it.

When we constantly hear all the counterarguments to meetings, we often forget why they are important. The truth is that most hotel operations are not corporate in nature and suffer from a lack of structure as opposed to too much.



Hotel Management - Meetings

So, how do we counteract this? One on One's.

In my opinion, One-on-ones are a foundational building block to running an effective hotel property. If you're a manager of managers, this is the first meeting cadence you should implement and follow religiously.

Let's look at some ways these sessions can benefit you, your team and your hotel.

Accountability:

One-on-ones create a culture of accountability within your hotel. It is much easier to track what is being accomplished if you and your direct report are forced to face the facts every session.

Detailed Record:

Keeping open records viewable by yourself and your direct report will allow you to make educated decisions based on facts for your organization in the future. Is this person developing the way you would like? The proof is in the pudding.

Ongoing Coaching:

Routine touchpoints allow you to coach and learn from your Team Members regularly over time. Giving you the ability to be the mentor leader they deserve.​

Discovering Blind Spots:​​If you are vulnerable during your sessions, you might find some blind spots in your own management style or within your hotel operation. Simultaneously, you can open up these blind spots for your other managers.

Continually Building Culture:

Creating a connection with your fellow leaders will lift up your entire hotel. A strong culture within your team begins with a strong culture at the top.

If you implement one-on-ones in your organization, follow them religiously, set the right cadence and run them the right way, you'll be amazed at the transformation within your hotel.
